My friend MarieTherese Valarao

Recently I learned of a Facebook friend that is quite a lot older than she appears! I was shocked! She looks like a young 29 to 30 year old with radiant, beautiful, wrinkle free skin!

Of course, I ask her about her secrets of maintaining young, fabulous looking skin! From MarieTherese:
  • Thanks, Nat, for your compliment. I use a lot of common sense. I keep things simple. I read a lot, do research, so I know what's good for the body (and the soul) :) It is good to sleep at least seven hours, better if eight hours. I use almond oil for skin (sparingly). My favorite fruits are: oranges and apples (the small "Gala" ones). I drink lots of water. I do not overeat and no pork on my diet. I notice my skin gets oily and uneven in tone. Oh, avoid getting angry :) uh-oh, I know it's not easy, but you can avoid it and pray about it. And yes!,  genetics play a big part. Mom looked very young when she was in her mid and late forties. It looks like I exceeded the years because I am now in my mid-sixties (64 going on 65), and a big factor also is avoiding too much sun exposure. I used sunblock before, but now I avoid, as much as I can I avoid chemicals on my skin (due to cancer reports, yay!!)

Okay, let me add one more thing: I used to wash my face with warm water. Then I found out that cold water makes our skin radiant! Thus, I now use cold water. Also, I do not scrub my face. Be gentle with your skin, my friend. Tap, tap, tap. It is good for your face. Bye now!! God Bless!! :)

Thank you, thank you, my friend MarieTherese! You have given us some very useful information! I greatly appreciate it! You look like a radiant, beautiful young 29!
    God Bless!

Barbary Fig Oil comes from the flowers of the cactus fig, (Opuntia ficus indica cactus). The flowers, are a reddish, purple fruit that have seeds inside. The seeds are dried and pressed to make the oil. The flowers produce such little oil, that it takes approximately 30 kilos to make 1 liter of this oil. Stress!

Election Day is upon us, followed shortly by the holidays! Added stress, to our already busy, stressful lives! What can this added stress do to you?

Stress can lower your immune system, causing health issues. It can cause gastrointestinal or psychological issues. Stress can cause tension, which leads to other physical ailments. It can cause excessive hair loss and wrinkles!

Respect yourself and relax! Get out and exercise, or escape for some meditation or quiet time. Journal or blog your thoughts. Thinking them through can help. Or get a massage! My favorite!

Massages are often thought of as a luxury. However, they are seen in other countries as being therapeutic for controlling illness or helping the sick. In China, there are hospital wings dedicated to massage therapy to help the sick, from cancer patients to new mothers. Health benefits from a massage are many!

Lower your stress, feel better, look better, live longer! Give yourself some respect!

Fig Oil

I grew up with a fig tree, my neighbor's fig tree to be exact! Yes, we would go and pick the figs that would end up over our fence. They were sweet and quite enjoyable.
Fig trees are historically from Asia and the Mediterranean area. They are now grown around the world where the climate is tropical or mild.
Figs are mainly used for consumption. Figs can be eaten raw, stewed, cooked or made into pies, cookies, puddings or other baked goods. They are also used for medicinal, perfume, aromatherapy and lubricant uses.
Fig oil comes from the seeds inside the fruit and it can also come from the leaves of  a fig tree.

How does Fig oil work on hair? It is known to moisturize, and hydrate the scalp. It helps control hair loss and help encourage new stronger hair growth. This oil is said to work great on nails and skin as well!

Geishas are sophisticated, mysterious, beautiful and seductive! They are very feminine. Poised with grace, dignity,  and rigid with etiquette. They are often called "the butterflies of the east". There are so many details and secrets that surround the Geishas life.

One beauty secret is that they use Camelia Seed Oil. This precious, non-drying, non-clogging, oil is rich in vitamins and minerals. Particularly it has a natural emollient called squalene. A deficiency of squalene causes dry and pre-mature aging. Resulting in wrinkles and sagging.

Coffee...More Than a Morning Drink...

Coffee is wonderful for the morning! It is tasty, much needed and addictive! Did you know that used coffee grounds have so many uses? From skin and hair care, to helping our environment, used coffee grounds can be beneficial.

Used coffee grounds can be used in your plants or compost bins as an awesome fertilizer. It helps the plants by adding nutrients to the soil and stimulating growth.

In my post about Colombian Women...Amazing Bodies, used coffee grounds can be used for a skin cellulite treatment. When used coffee grounds are mixed with oils or warm water, this blend makes a wonderful skin exfoliant. You can slough away dead skin cells and the coffee grounds act as a diuretic to help with reducing excess water under the skin.

They can also be used as a skin exfoliant for the face to help refresh a tired look. Or add coffee grounds to a facial mask.
Mix:  1/4 cup used coffee grounds with 1 egg white
Apply to face, let dry then rinse off.

Used coffee grounds can also nourish and give luster and shine to the hair. Here are a couple ways to use coffee in your hair routine:
-Add to the hair before shampooing, rub in and rinse. Wash and condition as usual.
-Or you can pour a cup of cooled black coffee on the hair and leave in for about 15 minutes. Then wash and rinse as usual.
**It is not recommended to use coffee in the hair with blonde hair, it may stain.

Finally, used coffee grounds can also be used as a deodorizer, to help take unpleasant odors off of the skin, like garlic, fish or onions. Simply rub your hands under water with the coffee grounds.

So many more uses for coffee than originally thought!

Daily she massages her scalp with Olive Oil to keep her hair hydrated, soft, silky and beautiful!

Coconut Oil...My Personal Favorite!

Coconut oil can be used for many purposes. From cooking to massage to hair, it is quite versatile. Personally I love the manageability, softness and shine it leaves behind. No wonder models around the world are beginning to use it.

Models from runways to magazine covers have been using Coconut oil to have beautiful, fabulous looking hair.
Some will apply a small amount of Coconut oil at night, on roots and throughout hair and ends. They sleep with it and wash out in the morning.
Others will apply Coconut oil on in the evening, wrap in towel and keep on for 2 to 3 hours before washing out.

Beautiful hair does take a little effort, however it does not have to be expensive!

Give your hair some respect and love!

A Do It Yourself Tip From Mexico

Many women dream for thicker, fuller hair. I used to have that dream. I was envious of my girlfriend,Arlain, with her long, gorgeous, to die for, thick black straight hair!
Another friend, listed under "Credit to the Person that got me started", introduced me to Folichili Shampoo, available at respected roots.com. It changed my life! A year and a half later I have longer, thicker, fuller hair. Now she is envious of my long, luscious curls!

Mexico has an assortment of natural shampoos that help stimulate the scalp and encourage hair growth. They are too numerous to mention. However, they all have a similar element. Coconut, rosemary or almond oils to help stimulate the scalp.

Other than oils to stimulate the scalp, you can massage scalp or try this recipe recommended by some women from Mexico.

Fresh Jalapeño pepper (finely chopped)
1/2 cup vodka

Marinate finely chopped jalapeno in vodka, for several days. Every day massage a small amount into scalp. This combination is suppose to stimulate the scalp to assist with hair growth.
Women from Mexico swear by this and claim that it helps with thinning and losing of the hair.

Great Info for Great Health

Check out this blog by my friend! Great juice and health info!

Beautiful women of Poland

In Poland, women love to use honey for their face. It has moisturizing, softening and anti-microbial properties. Women with oily or dry skin can safely use it.
Apply a thin layer of honey to your face. Wait a few minutes and rinse off.

Honey can also help plump and soften your lips. Just add a few drops to your lips.

Another money and weight saver is how often Poland families eat out compared to American families. Families from Poland typically spend 5% of their family budget on eating out. American families typically spend 37% of their family budget on eating out.
Huge difference! It is easier to control your calorie intake, how your food is cooked and what is in your food when you cook it yourself.

Dominican Republic and Haiti Beauties...

Dominican Republic has their share of beautiful women! Some like to straighten their hair naturally.
They pour seltzer water onto their hair after a shower for straighter and shinier hair.

In Haiti, women use a skin care secret to keep their skin looking soft and supple. They use Rose Water to hydrate the skin and to increase circulation.
Fresh Cucumber mixed with yogurt to refresh their face. They mix them together and apply it to the face for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off.

We fight the aging process to remain beautiful! Natural products are the safest for our skin and hair.

Women from Chile

Women all over the world have their own special ways of making themselves more beautiful. Women from Chile use a home made facial mask that leaves their skin looking marvelous!

Squish up some white grapes.
Mix in 1 teaspoon of white flour.
Mix together. Put paste on face.
Leave on for about 10 to 15 minutes then rinse off.

Beauty is only skin deep! Our true beauty lies inside....
Look gorgeous inside and out!

Beer...Not Just For Drinking!

Growing up, in the 70's, I remember a shampoo called "Body on Tap". It was enriched with 1/3 beer. It would give your hair manageability, gorgeous volume and excess body.
You can make this shampoo with:

1 cup of beer ( any type)
1 cup of your favorite shampoo (personally mine is Folichili, available at respectedroots.com)

Heat beer in small saucepan over medium heat and boil until beer has evaporated to about 1/4 cup. Cool. Add beer to shampoo and stir well.
Shampoo and rinse well.

Enjoy your full volume and body!

Beer....not just for drinking anymore!

Vietnamese Hair Secret to Shiny Hair

So many different cultures in our world. They all have their own natural recipes that they use to get thicker, shinier, longer, more beautiful hair!
Here is beauty secret that has been passed down from generation to generation in the Vietnamese community....
It is known that when you drink the right amount of sake (rice wine), everyone can look beautiful! However, older generations take the sake (rice wine) and rinse their hair with it. The sake (rice wine) brings out the shine to give them beautiful, shiny hair!

Cultural diversity is the best part of our world. We are each unique and we have much to offer!

Colombian Women...Amazing Bodies

Colombian women are beautiful. They are known for their amazing bodies! They have a beauty secret!

Psst.....they use coffee grounds as a cellulite treatment in a topical application.
You combine a cup of coffee grounds with a cup of warm water and olive oil in a small bowl.
Apply the mixture to your skin and massage it on for a few minutes using your knuckles or cellulite brush. Rinse off. This increases circulation and helps your body release toxins.

I think I will run out to Starbucks for some used coffee grounds and give this recipe a try!
Sounds interesting!

I don't want to fight aging; I want to take good care of myself, but plastic surgery and all that? I'm not interested.....Christine Lahti

Harem Women Secrets...Longer, More Beautiful Eyelashes

Turkish, Egyptian, Arabian, as well as most Middle Eastern women in general, are known for their amazingly long and thick eyelashes. How do they get these  abundant, feminine and exotic eyelashes?

Every single morning and evening, take a small eyelash/eyebrow brush and smear it with a tiny bit of almond or olive oil. Then, in front of your mirror, comb the brush carefully through your own eyelashes (with no mascara on them of course.)

A beauty secret to longer, fuller more beautiful eyelashes.

Natural Recipes

I haven't had a chance to try all the recipes I blog about.  However I have tried some.
My favorites are the green tea with rosemary water and the coconut milk.

Coconut milk is used for shiny hair. I found it left my hair full of volume and very manageable.

Green Tea with Rosemary Water is used to leave your hair strong and beautiful. I found it left my hair very shiny and healthy looking. It was manageable and had a nice look to it.

I tried the recipe titled "Beautiful Hair Made Easy". It is a recipe with a combination of 5 different oils. I loved the way it left my hair feeling soft and silky. This one you need to repeat often to see results.

"Save Some Money on Skincare" is another recipe I tried for my facial cream. It felt great when I put it on, but results did not stay all day. You do need to replenish hydration in your skin.

Vitamin E in the scalp is another recipe I tried. It is used to help with hair growth and needs to be done more frequently to get results.

Mayonaise in the hair! Yes I tried it! It was nice, but I prefer the coconut milk over this one!

Natural recipes are fun to try! I have enjoyed these new discoveries! I look forward to researching and discovering more.

Inner Peace

How do you feel on the inside? Anxious, nervous, angry, stressed, depressed, bitter? Most of us go through our lives feeling one of those emotions listed. We consider it part of our normal routine. Some thrive on it to get them through the day.  Others will let the emotion eat away at them, eventually going into silence or violence.

Many have forgotten how it feels to be calm and to have inner peace. Inner peace can come through prayer, meditation deep breathing, exercise or hypnosis. Taking a walk, jog or Just taking a couple minutes to re focus on your breathing and clear your mind and think of nothing, can make a big difference in your day. It lowers your stress.

It is common for one to lose 50 to 100 hairs per day. Stress can lead to excess hair loss!  Respect yourself and give yourself a moment to think of nothing!  Respectedroots.com

To live the dream of Rapunzel...

Came upon this amazing article about this woman who has not cut her hair in 26 years. Article is written by Zhao Feifel (eastday.com) I trimmed down the article and bolded some of the key points from this article. To live a dream of beautiful, long, long hair....

China's first lady of long hair reveals scalp secret
By Zhao Feifei (eastday.com)
Updated: 2005-07-06 10:24
China's first lady of long hair whose tresses are 4.2 meters long was the star attraction at another exhibition in the ongoing "The Year of France in China" which delved deeply into the secrets of the growth on everyone's scalp.

Dai Yueqin shows off her 4.2-meterlong hair at the “Decoding the Hair” exhibition in Beijing. [eastday]

An old Chinese saying says that long hair will bring a woman "troubles." However, that is definitely not the case with fashion-conscious ladies in today's China who well know the importance to their appearance of having a chic hairstyle.
Just ask Dai Yueqin.
Dai, the woman with the longest locks in China, removed the scarf wrapped around her head to show off her 4.2-meter-long hair at the "Decoding the Hair" exhibition in Beijing last week. Dai has not cut her hair for 26 years from when she was 14 years old. She was swamped by visitors at the exhibition and she shared with them her tips on how best to look after one's hair.
Patricia Pineau, a professional hair expert, says given that an individual hair grows between 1 and 1.5 centimeters a month and that its usual life expectancy is about three years, a person with very long hair is quite exceptional.
Unlike blood, hair can store evidence of a person's toxicology and food habits. So 6cm of hair can hold six months' worth of information about their lifestyle.
And it pays special attention to one's hair in summer. The sun-drenched season can be extremely harmful to hair and while people use some form of skin-care protection, most don't even think about the harsh effect the sun has on hair.
Alain Franbourg, one of the co-authors of the "Science of Hair Care," says that sunbathing and swimming will damage even the healthiest hair by exposing it to harmful UV light, sea salt, and pool chemicals. And if one's hair is already dry, brittle, damaged, bleached or dyed, great care is needed to protect it.
Unprotected hair soaks up the sun's rays and the pool's chlorinated water like a sponge.
Heat has a drying effect. Wind dries out the hair and increases static electricity. UV rays weaken the hair and fade color. Salt and chlorine attack, the hair follicle opens up and hair can fall out or split ends appear.
Franbourg says that Chinese people's hair is much more malleable compared with that of Europeans and its completely round circumference indicates that it should have a better sheen. However, Chinese hair still needs protection.
The newest development in hair care is protective products that utilize natural plant proteins in shampoos and conditioners, vitamins, UV filters and polymers that coat and actually repair damaged hair.
A healthy diet also helps. Nuts and seeds can help promote luster and the fiber from fruits and vegetables help to restore shine and body.
And don't forget to have eight to 10 glasses of water a day because water benefits both hair and skin.
And last of all, Franbourg warns "not to brush your hair too much" because it hurts the scales protecting the hair strands."

A Natural Way To Straighten Your Hair

Straightening your hair can be damaging by the chemicals and the heat. It can leave your hair fried or frayed.
There is a natural way to straighten your hair without the heat and chemicals. However, you will need to try this a couple of times before it works.

Coconut milk and Lemon Juice

Juice one lemon. Add the lemon juice to 1 cup of coconut milk. Place this mixture in the refrigerator where it should begin to coagulate and form into a runny paste.

Heat a towel by either putting it in the dryer on high heat or by ironing it. Apply the coconut milk and lemon juice paste to your hair. Wrap the hot towel around your hair. The heat from the towel helps the mixture to saturate.

Leave the towel on for 2 to 5 minutes. Wash your hair as normal. Run a comb through your hair to remove tangles.

Using this recipe each time before you shampoo, for 3 weeks, you should start seeing sleeker, straighter results.

In the Philippines, they like to use coconut milk for strengthening and straightening hair. Most women from there have beautiful, thick hair.

Personally I like my curls....I will respect my curly roots and enjoy them.  Respectedroots.com

You can see the difference.......

This was originally posted in March 2012. I thought it was a nice follow up to the last post...
When I get a chance I will take an updated photo......

Almost a year after using the shampoo.....

My entire life my hair would never grow past my shoulders. I have now been using the Folichili shampoo daily for almost a year.
Recently I straightened my hair and added some color. I never had the courage to straighten my hair before because I have always had thin, curly, short hair.  This is my hair now. Picture was taken on 3/9/12.
The results may not be overnight  hair growth, but with consistent use, the Folichili shampoo has made a difference in my life!

My Story--Re visited

I started using the Folichili Shampoo in March 2011. My hair would not grow past shoulder length and was thinning along the top front. My entire life I have always had difficulty growing my hair past the shoulders. The shampoo was recommended by a friend. I even had doubts. I tried it and around 4 weeks I noticed my hair did look longer and slightly fuller. I continued using daily and noticed my hair began growing from about 1/4" or less per month to almost 1" per month. With my hair being curly it is hard to notice the results right away. However, my co-workers began noticing my hair growth around May. When my friends began asking me how to get shampoo, I found it hard to get in San Diego. I had to travel to Los Angeles or Mexico to purchase it. So. my friends inspired me to open my own internet business. Since August 2011, I have been creating Respected Roots with my 18 year old and my family. We created a business that has natural hair products at a low price. www.respectedroots.com

Long hair has made a difference in my life with my confidence! I am a woman in my mid 40's going through mid life. When I get a chance, I will take an updated photo. Busy with work, busy with family, busy with life! Respect yourself and give yourself some time to enjoy you!

Beautiful Hair Made Easy...

Beautiful women with long gorgeous hair are seen throughout the world. What are their secrets? Is it cultural, nutrition or genetics? Nutrition and genetics do play a part in long, beautiful hair. However, some hair care routines are simple and low priced because they use natural products.
Some women in India use a down to earth approach for hair care. They believe the scalp must be clean and well nourished to grow beautiful thick hair. The hair cannot grow if the roots are clogged.

Hair massage recipe to open up roots:
40 drops of rosemary oil
40 drops of thyme oil
40 drops of lavender oil
40 drops of lemon oil
100 ml bottle of almond oil

Massage generously into scalp. While massaging tug on hair slightly. Cover with towel, leave on for 30 minutes, and shampoo.

Respect

Texts, emails and phone calls, can sometimes leave the other person with a misunderstanding. There may be an under written tone, or the words themselves, or how they are expressed can be offensive. One party thinks everything is cool, while other party thinks they are in trouble, being harassed, or left uncertain. Face to face conversations are difficult with our high speed technology, however they are much more effective. Think before you hit send...
Any of this may cause UN needed stress! Stress leads to hair loss and wrinkles. Respect yourself, respect others and think before you hit send!

Skin

Your skin does need good lotion/oils. However, what is more important is what we put on the inside. How much water we take in is important. Hydration and nutrition are valuable to the appearance of our skin. When properly hydrated your skin will look and feel supple. This is when the creams/lotions/oils are most beneficial. It is recommended 8 glasses of water a day. During the summer it is easy to drink that much. During the winter, it is more difficult. Remember your body, and skin need this extra hydration. Show your skin some respect! Hydrate first, soften it second with lotion/oils or creams.

Vitamin C and Hair

Since my last few posts involved Vitamin C, I thought I would continue on that trend.
Ever have hair color come out wrong. I have! I ran to the hair stylist the following day. She fortunately was able to darken my hair and it came out beautiful.
However, Vitamin C can help in this situation. My friend told me she used Vitamin C as a natural hair dye remover. She crushed up Vitamin C added to some shampoo and put on her wet hair. Put on shower cap, left in for about 30 min, then rinsed off.
Her hair was then two shades lighter than before. It helped her hair color oops!
I can't say if this works for everyone, but it is low in price and can be done at home after a hair color oops!!
Use at own risk.

Natural Skin Care

Haven't tried this recipe, but I will soon. It was recommended by a friend.

Concentrated tea extract (red, green or white tea)
mix with a small amount of Vitamin C powder (1/2 capsule)

Massage into skin. Rinse. Aides in skin renewal and reconstruction.
I will update my results when I try out recipe!
I love trying new things!

Respect! It is all about the respect!

More skin care....

My primary business respectedroots.com is primarily about hair care. However, some friends have asked me to include skincare into my posts. So, from time to time, I will mix it up! Vitamin C and skincare have been the latest buzz. Oprah, along with Dr. Lancer,  has launched a great skincare line, using this great anti oxidant. I haven't tried her new line but I hear great things about it!
Vitamin C helps the skin with renewal, reconstruction, and reducing wrinkles.
My friend is in her late 50's but she looks like she is in her 30's! When I asked her what her secret was, she told me she has been putting crushed up vitamin c powder in her face lotion for the past couple of years!
I began using this method as well. I noticed my wrinkles began fading right away. Of course they are not totally gone, but have faded immensely. Be cautious with how much powder you put in your face lotion. A 1/2 teaspoon was recommended to me. However, if face cream is not kept cold in refrigerator it will begin to smell funny after 2 weeks.
A great little trick that saves you money! Use with caution. Not recommended if you have acne or broken sores on face. This is only for informational purposes, it may not work for everyone.
Respect your skin, respect your hair....respectedroots.com

Natural Recipes For Strengthening Hair

Coconut Oil is a diverse product. It can be used for consumption, health care, skin care and hair care. It is involved in several recipes. Recently it was used to lift the fog that Alzheimer's patients have. It is a very diverse product with many benefits.
Honey is a wonderful natural product that is used for consumption and is also a humectant. It can help the hair retain moisture.

This natural recipe can help strengthen the hair:
4 tbs of extra virgin coconut oil
2 tbs of pure honey
Place the coconut oil and honey in a small cup and place the cup in a larger bowl of hot water.  Allow the cup to stay in the water for a few minutes until the mixture is warm.  Pour the mixture onto freshly washed  hair. Put on a shower cap, and wrap with a towel to prevent mixture from dripping onto face. Let it sit for 20 minutes, then rinse out 80-90% of the conditioner, and style as usual.

Egg yolks can be used for consumption and for the hair. They can be used for strengthening, conditioning or preventing hair loss.Vitamins A, D and E are present in egg yolks. These vitamins provide protection against drying factors that affect hair like sun, or chlorine and they protect against thinning and loss of hair. A quick easy recipe for strengthening hair:
Mix an egg yolk with ripe avocado. Mix into a paste, put on hair and leave for 15 minutes. Wash, as usual. I love trying new recipes and have not been disappointed yet! Respect your roots....respectedroots.com

Fresh Face News

I have had such fun researching through other people, internet and creativity about natural hair recipes, that someone asked me to include some fresh face recipes. I came across two that interested me....
An oatmeal mask which helps open up the pores and exfoliates dry and dead skin cells.

1/2 cup oatmeal
3 tbs honey
2 tbs vitamin e oil
Mix oatmeal and honey first to form a paste. Add oil. Wash face, dry, then apply. Leave on for about 15 min. Wash off.

Refreshing facial wash:

1 tbs fine white sugar
2 tsp of lemon, calamansi or orange juice, fresh squeezed.
1 tsp water
Combine ingredients and apply to clean face in a circular motion. Rinse well. Vitamin C is great for wrinkles and can give you shiny beautiful skin.
Take care if you have acne...this recipe may not work for broken skin.
Care for yourself...respect yourself!

Summer Heat Still On....

Summer is still warming up our days even though we are nearing the season of Fall.  My friends with long hair wear their hair up in cute summer hair styles. I prefer wearing my hair down. I am in my mid 40's, going through change of life. This is the time when women have hormone issues, start losing hair, start gaining weight and wrinkles. Through exercise, good skin care and good hair care routines, I feel fabulous, look better than ever and I finally have the long hair that I dreamed of my entire life! I want to show it off! I love it so much the heat of summer does not bother me!
My entire life I have had short, thin, shoulder length hair.  Since I began using Folichili Shampoo my hair is now half way down my back, with curls, looking pretty and healthy.
We all have bad hair days! Somedays I wake up with volume, and out of control curls! Other days I shake out my hair and it looks gorgeous! That's life for most of us women! Good hair care routines help reduce bad hair days. Find one that works for your type of hair and stick with it. I have sampled so many hair products and have spent thousands of dollars, and keep coming back to the basic products that work well for me.
Look at the labels before trying a new product. If your conditioner has alcohol as an ingredient, which most do, don't leave it in the hair too long. Rinse it out quickly. Alcohol may control oils but it dries out thin hair and thins out thick hair. Now that I know this, my conditioners go on and come off quickly! My hair feels the effects but does not get the dryness anymore!
Take care of yourself at any age! Build healthy routines now and your skin and hair will thank you later!

Natural is the way to go....

Natural, organic, green are the new buzz words. Our ancestors used natural recipes to have gorgeous, beautiful hair full of volume. They did not have fancy, expensive shampoo or conditioners. They tried various recipes through trial and error and shared the ones that worked through the gossip mills.
I am enjoying researching various recipes and sharing the ones that have intrigued me.

Mustard Seed Tea:
A tea made from mustard seeds is used for hair growth. Add 1 tsp of mustard seeds to about 1 cup of boiling water and steep for 5 minutes. Strain the seeds and allow the mixture to cool before drinking.
I love tea....I look forward to trying this.

 Olive Oil
It is said that a scalp massage with extra virgin olive oil will help with hair growth. Olive oil is being used more for cooking, massage and hair care. Shampoo after the scalp massage.

We have a lot going on in our lives. Give your self and hair some time and love. Take a moment, breath, relax and enjoy the beauty of our selves...

Limp Hair....Help!!

Flat, limp hair can be due to genetics, thin hair or too much oil build up in the hair. Too much oil build up can cause the hair to be limp.
Baby shampoos are lighter on the hair and can help with excess oils. Shampoos with rosemary or orange extracts can be gentle on the hair and help with build up. Also baby powder sprinkled on the crown and hairline can help soak up excess oils.
Here are a couple home recipes that can help add volume or growth to your hair.

For natural hair growth:
Fresh curry leaves and coconut oil. Boil these two together until the black residue starts forming. Save this residue. Use twice a week on scalp. This recipe also helps to fight gray hair.

For limp hair:
Rinse hair after shampoo with vinegar.

or

Wash hair with baking soda. This helps control and minimize the oil build up.

Ginseng and hair...

I never thought of Ginseng as a hair helper. Ginseng is another powerful herb that is commonly used in many Chinese medicines. Ginseng is an adaptogen, which causes the body to adapt to stress. Stress is a common cause of hair loss. It is common to lose 50-100 hairs a day. However, after a stressful week I notice I may lose slightly more hair than usual. Since I use the Folichili shampoo regularly, I don't notice a hair loss like I use to. Ginseng can be found in shampoos for external use on the scalp. One shampoo that has Ginseng is Cre-C. It is a light scented shampoo, that leaves your hair feeling great!

Vitamin E and Hair!

Vitamin E is needed by the body for many different reasons. Recently, it was found to also be useful for the hair.
Our scalp needs to have proper circulation in order to keep the hair follicles alive and thriving. Massaging your scalp can be beneficial to encourage circulation to the scalp. When done daily, scalp massages can help to the hair grow.
Vitamin E capsules can help for hair growth, because it contains valuable antioxidants that help to keep the immune system up and improves circulation to all parts of the body, including the scalp. However, use care when taking Vitamin E because excessive use can lead to side effects, such as causing clotting problems, and causing blood to thin.
Vitamin E Oil can be used in small amounts on the scalp after shampooing. This helps encourage growth. It is also great for using small amounts on ends of hair to keep them hydrated and prevents split ends.
Avocados are a good source of natural vitamin E. Enjoy them. Respect your body! Respect your hair! Respectedroots.com

Loving Home Recipes For Hair

Never knew so many home recipes existed. As I do my research I stumble upon variations and variations of recipes. Do they work? I have tried a couple with successful results.
Recently I tried the pure coconut milk recipe:

One can of pure coconut milk is needed. Pour the whole can or just half on dry hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave in for about 20 to 30 minutes. Wash as usual.

I loved the results. My hair had more volume and was more manageable!

Here are some more great home recipes to try:

Almond oil or coconut oil (available at respectedroots.com)
These oils are used to help strengthen and repair the hair. By applying a few drops of almond oil on the hair and scalp several times a week can increase strength, thickness, and it gives your hair a natural sheen.

Rosemary and lavender oil
Rosemary oil and lavender oil are used to thicken hair.  It is useful to overcome the problem of dandruff. The oil can be used by all types of hair can stimulate hair follicles, while slowing down the process of hair loss early on. Lavender oil can also be considered aromatherapeutic.

Home made hair conditioner:

4 drops of rosemary essential oils
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup olive oil (warm)

Mix all ingredients well and pour into a clean bottle. Dampen your hair and apply the mix gently rubbing the scalp and making sure the mix is spread well all over the scalp and hair. Use a warm towel and wrap the hair up leaving it on for 20-30 minutes (or use a shower cap). Wash your hair with a shampoo and rinse off with cool water.

Natural Recipes for Hair Growth...

My hair has been growing quicker than before by using the Folichili shampoo. However, before Folichili, before Ovation, before Rogaine, before minoxidil, there were homemade recipes.
I did research and came up with some that were not too wild.

Rosemary water: A daily rinse with rosemary water that will make your hair grow quicker. (Interesting, this is one of ingredients in Folichili.) My suggestion is to have a water bottle filled with Rosemary herbs. Let sit, then use on hair daily.

Potato water: When cooking potatoes do not throw away the water. Let it cool, and rinse your hair with it. This rinse accelerates hair growth. Interesting!!

Grapeseed oil: Grapeseed oil is believed to enhance hair growth. Give your scalp a massage using this oil before bedtime.

Vitamin E: Combine 1/4 cup of vitamin E oil, 1/4 cup of jojoba oil, 15 drops of rosemary essential oil and 15 drops of peppermint essential oil in a small bottle with a tight cap. Shake to mix. Apply to the scalp nightly. Pierce vitamin E capsules and press to extract the vitamin E oil.
Personally have not tried these recipes yet, but always fun to try on another day! Respect your hair...respect your roots!
