Natural Recipes for Hair Growth...

My hair has been growing quicker than before by using the Folichili shampoo. However, before Folichili, before Ovation, before Rogaine, before minoxidil, there were homemade recipes.
I did research and came up with some that were not too wild.

Rosemary water: A daily rinse with rosemary water that will make your hair grow quicker. (Interesting, this is one of ingredients in Folichili.) My suggestion is to have a water bottle filled with Rosemary herbs. Let sit, then use on hair daily.

Potato water: When cooking potatoes do not throw away the water. Let it cool, and rinse your hair with it. This rinse accelerates hair growth. Interesting!!

Grapeseed oil: Grapeseed oil is believed to enhance hair growth. Give your scalp a massage using this oil before bedtime.

Vitamin E: Combine 1/4 cup of vitamin E oil, 1/4 cup of jojoba oil, 15 drops of rosemary essential oil and 15 drops of peppermint essential oil in a small bottle with a tight cap. Shake to mix. Apply to the scalp nightly. Pierce vitamin E capsules and press to extract the vitamin E oil.
Personally have not tried these recipes yet, but always fun to try on another day! Respect your hair...respect your roots!

Home Recipe For Hair Volume

Thick hair strands usually will yield a nice thick head of hair. Some of us are not so lucky. Some of us have thin, wispy, limp hair. Before I began using Folichili shampoo, available at respectedroots.com, my hair was very thin and wavy. Since I have been using this product my hair has grown in length and is finally filling in with thickness and volume.   My youngest still has thin hair, even though it has grown in length.  We decided to try this recipe. We only left the solution in our hair for half the time. However, we did notice a difference. We both noticed more volume especially in our ends where our hair thins out.  It doesn't hurt to give it a try.....       Ingredients:
3 Egg Yolks,   6 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil,    One Vitamin E Capsule

Combine egg yolks, cut open one vitamin E gel caplet and squeezee the contents into the bowl, add olive oil. Now apply this mixture to hair. Leave on hair for 30 minutes. Rinse off and wash as usual. This recipe pumps up volume in your hair. Love your hair.....respect your roots!

Home made recipes for shiny hair

Some expensive hair products promise shiny hair. Although they can be costly. Here are 2 easy and low priced hair treatments you can try at home. Personally I have not tried these recipes yet. However, I will soon!                                         Mix 3 tablespoons of honey and 1 pint of water. Rub mixture into hair and scalp. Leave on for 20 minutes (cover hair with a shower cap) Rinse hair thoroughly with cool water and blow dry hair on medium high. You can save the remaining honey mixture and use once a week.
Or you can try....One can of pure coconut milk is needed. Pour the whole can or just half on dry hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave in for about 20 to 30 minutes. Wash as usual.                                                    Our ancestors used natural products and had beautiful hair. Getting back to basic.....respect your roots.....respectedroots.com

Written by Erica Cheung for Huff Post. Placenta for Hair

I came across this article written by Erica Cheung at Huff Post Style Blog. Interesting article about home made hair recipes. Thank you Erica for information! Great writing!

It began when I was about five years old. My mother would take me to the kitchen, sit me on a bar stool and prepare a beauty concoction for my hair in a silverware spoon. She would heat it over a flame (usually on the stove) and when the liquid was hot, but not boiling, she would distribute it over my chocolate brown hair, concentrating on the scalp. I would spend the next 30-40 minutes with a plastic bag wrapped around my head, pretending I was a martian.
The concoction consisted of almond oil, tomato juice and placenta. Yes, placenta -- like afterbirth.
At the time, I didn't realize that what my mom was putting in my hair came from a living thing's uterus. In all honesty, the placenta smelled really good and looked like vegetable oil. The bi-weekly event became a beauty ritual and I've used placenta my whole life because of it. The memory of my mother lathering afterbirth all over my head is akin to other memories of her teaching me how to braid my hair or going to buy my first bra. It was all very normal to me!
At-home beauty treatments have always been popular--who hasn't heard of using oatmeal and honey as an at-home exfoliant or using sugar and lavender oil for a body scrub? It's the placenta that sticks out as the odd ingredient, turning an at-home beauty remedy into something eccentric and foreign. Placenta: who even does that?! However, is it weirder than Tom Cruise putting bird poop on his face or Kate Middleton using bee venom facials? I think not.
According to Kentaro Yoshida, director of the Yoshida Clinic in Japan that specializes in dermatology and author of the book "Placenta Power," the Chinese have been using placenta as a remedy for aging skin and shiny hair for over 2000 years. Yoshida also claims that placenta was employed as a heath treatment in Ancient Egypt and that Marie Antoinette used it as a beauty elixir (that's right, as a drink!)
Whether or not the infamous cake queen used placenta is of no consequence. When you consider that placenta is afterbirth, it doesn't matter if Aphrodite used it to promote her eternal youth, let's be honest: it is still a little gross. However, the health factors and benefits of the gooey substance shouldn't be ignored. Placenta is the organ that forms in the embryo during pregnancy that transfers nutrients and oxygen from the mother's body to the growing baby. The placenta is also vital in the regeneration of cells and the acceleration of growth of the liver.
Products made of the substance are widely available across Asia, though many women keep their own placentas after pregnancy for future use... which probably seems a little odd to most of us. In the United States, you can buy hair treatments made from placenta at beauty supply stores like Ricky's or Sally's.
The one I've always used is 'Hask Placenta No-Rise Instant Hair Repair Treatment,' and is made from cow. That probably sounds a little disgusting, but it works! It really does. Growing up, I had the most beautiful hair; you could definitely tell the difference the placenta treatment made. When I use it now, my hair feels soft and smells really good for days.
I mean, really: if the placenta has already done its natural purposes and it's not being used any more... why not put in it your hair?

Shiny and healthy!

We know that healthy, shiny hair is a combination of diet, exercise and good hair maintenance. Some are genetically lucky, while others need to focus more on hair care. Alcohol in hair products can dry hair. Even quality hair products may contain alcohol. Check product packages for ingredients.  Environmental conditions like pollution, and humidity can also rob hair of its natural shine.
Skipping shampoo may help hair to retain shine. However, it can also leave it limp. Daily hair washing can beat up the hair, or it can leave it pretty. Personally, I wash my roots daily and let shampoo rinse through rest of hair. Applying coconut oil on hair ends with my conditioner. Rinsing out conditioner quickly. My hair is the longest and prettiest it had ever been.  I guess it took me years to learn how to care for my hair.                                                  One of my stylist friends told me she recommends if washing hair daily then apply conditioner first.  Then, without rinsing in between, apply shampoo just to the roots, lather, and rinse everything out. Hair will be clean but will retain shine. Many other suggestions for shiny hair are available all over the internet.
Basically, beautiful hair is like having a love affair with your hair... Give it love and attention and it will shine!

Sweaty Hair...

It feels good to sweat! Drips running down the sides of your face and neck. Sounds gross, but feels great after a good exercise session. Sweating does help the scalp by clearing or unblocking the roots of excess hair products. However, if the sweat is allowed to dry in your hair, then it leaves a salty residue. This residue can damage hair if left in for awhile. You should rinse off after a good sweaty work out. Not only for the hygiene but for your hair as well. Enjoy your life! Exercise and look beautiful!!

Hormones Affect Hair...

Hormones from stress or exercise can help or hurt your hair. Stress produces hormones. One of them is Cortisone. A hormone that is secreted by the adrenal gland. This hormone stops hair follicles from growing leading to thinning of the hair. Moderate exercise helps in producing serotonin and endorphins. These hormones help the body in dealing with stress.
DHT which means dihydrotestosterone is a hormone that can also cause hair to thin. If DHT levels are allowed to rise then this slows the growth of new hair cells, causing less hair growth. Slow steady exercises like jogging or yoga can help in reducing the formation of DHT.  However, over exercising once in a while can produce more DHT. So, always try for moderate to exercise.

Exercise and hair...

Certain exercises can help with hair growth by increasing blood flow or encouraging the body to release endorphins. Stomach crunches will make your body strong and squats help in releasing growth hormones. Weightlifting exercises also release endorphins that help with hair loss.
Yoga is also helpful in hair growth. There are different types of yoga exercises that workout the entire body. Yoga helps the body to relax and makes the muscles of the body more flexible. A relaxed body and mind can help with hair growth.                                                                    Deep breathing exercises purify the blood and helps it to carry nutrients and oxygen to the cells of the body, including the scalp. Breathing exercises also help in lowering stress levels.                                    Along with healthy exercise, you need to follow a healthy diet and get enough sleep. It takes more than one element to keep you and your hair healthy. Live healthy, look great and thrive!

Exercise for body, mind and hair!

Regular exercise is great for the body! It helps de-stress your body which helps relax your mind. Exercise on a regular basis has been found to have a direct link to healthy hair. Also it has been found that lack of exercise often leads to brittle or lifeless hair.
As explained in an earlier blog, stress in our lives cause hair loss.  When blood circulation to the scalp area is less than the normal, due to stress, it will not receive the essential nutrients required for healthy hair growth.  Hair loss is not usually seen right away, it may be days or weeks later.
When you exercise your stress level decreases, returning healthy blood circulation to the scalp area which means better nourishment of the hair follicles. With improved blood circulation to the scalp hair follicles will get a good supply of oxygen and nutrients from our diet.  Good blood circulation also helps in distributing natural sebum evenly across the scalp, leading to good hair growth. This will result in healthier hair with more volume.
Go out and play! Get some exercise and make your body, mind and hair happy!

Natural conditioner

For many years, women have created their own hair recipes. They would try many different ones and share what works.  A friend told me about this recipe. Her grandma raved about it!                       Mayonnaise hair conditioner Ingredients: 1/2 cup mayo

Directions: Rinse and towel dry. Apply for 10-15 minutes, massage  into hair, shampoo again lightly and rinse with apple cider vinegar and water solution to remove smell and residue. Personally I have never tried this. Great hair deserves some love!

Chemically straightened hair

Many with curly or wavy hair get frustrated because of the time and effort needed to have tame hair. Personally I know this frustration. Many will hair dry and straighten their hair everyday, causing extreme dryness or damage to their hair. There are products that will help the hair look great but nothing can rebuild the hair structure once damaged.
Chemically straightening the hair can give you straight hair for months. However, is it worth the damage? The texture of your hair will decide how much damage your hair may end up having. Thin hair will damage easier, but thick hair may not stay straight that long. I have two friends that have had their hair chemically straightened. One friend, their hair stayed straight for about 2 months. The other friend, her hair is still straight after about 5 months.
Chemical relaxers are applied starting from the hair shaft. This changes the structural arrangement of the strands. The chemicals relax your waves and curls.
Some of the chemicals have carcinogens and other chemicals that may have some health effects related to it. Some have high levels of formaldehyde which can be dangerous. CONSULT with your hair dresser before having procedure done.
This process can be costly. You also may need to purchase the correct products for hair maintenance and there may be maintenance touch ups which may be needed. As well, is the structural damage that your hair may endure from the chemicals being used.
If any hair is damaged then trim up the ends and use Folichili Shampoo to grow your hair back.

Sea Water and Hair

Summer time is the perfect time to hit the beach! We protect our skin, but many don't protect the hair. Chlorine, sun and sea water can have damaging effects on your hair. I have covered chlorine and sun in the previous posts.  Sea water can cause drying damage to your hair. It creates a high saline environment. If the sea water is allowed to stay in the hair too long it can permeate the hair and cause drying. It can also clog the hair follicles and cause dry scalp. The best way to prevent damage is to rinse your hair, with clean water after exposure to sea water. Use a good shampoo and conditioner afterwards. Another method to prevent damage is to wet hair with clean water prior to going into the sea water. This way, less sea water will be absorbed into hair. As well you can always cover up with a scarf or hat. Keep your hair healthy! Give it some love with quality shampoos, conditioners and hair oils.

Sun and hair!

Summer is here and the sun has been warming up our lives. Many of us protect our skin from UV rays, but rarely do we protect our hair from UV rays. Ultra-violet (UV) light penetrates the hair shaft and damages its structure. UV breaks down specific amino acids, known as the building blocks of protein.  Hair is mostly made up of protein.  A loss of amino acids has been shown to have a negative impact on the natural shine and strength of the hair. Leaving it duller, weaker and with less elasticity. UV light also breaks down the pigment in your hair, causing the hair to bleach and become dry and brittle.
Products with UV filters or sunscreens for the hair do offer some protection. Similar to skin products, you need to reapply them to keep the protection constant. The best protection is to cover your hair with a hat or a scarf. It also helps to avoid exposure when the sun is highest, between the hours of 11am and 3pm. After long periods of sun exposure, condition your hair with a good conditioner and treat the ends of your hair with a hair oil or leave in treatment. Give your hair some extra love!

Swimming and hair

.
Summer is in full swing! Many of us are swimming more than usual. The chemicals used in swimming pools can be so drying to the hair.  Your hair strands can thin and ends can become dry and brittle.
What you can do to protect your hair.  Swim caps are available. Some will add conditioner or hair oil on hair and then put on the swim cap.  You can moisturize or use hair oils, prior to entering pool.  This helps to keep pool chemicals from being absorbed into the hair. You can also wet hair with regular water prior to entering pool. The regular water gets absorbed first and less pool water gets absorbed into hair. Being a swimmer myself, I have used several of these methods.
